Emergency Care
One of the most important veterinary axioms is do no harm. In brief, offer
the bird warmth, high humidity and rest. The chances of survival will
more than double if handling is kept to a minimum. Optimum temperature in an incubator
is 85-89° F with the humidity at least 70%. Condensation collecting on
the incubator walls is ideal for the critical avian patient. Food placed right on
the incubator floor and low level water dishes allow easy access for the bird. Do
not put perches in the incubator since a great deal of energy is required for a bird
to perch. An unconcious bird may need to be placed in a towel "doughnut"
to prop it up and to allow it to breath more easily. As soon as possible, the primary
medical problems should be addressed by an avian veterinarian.
